Overview

What is UX Fest SLO?

UX Fest SLO is a two-weekend UX design event at Cal Poly that helps students of all majors learn and practice user experience design. The festival includes workshops, panels, and networking opportunities, and culminates in a Designathon, where teams create, prototype, and present apps or web experiences to industry judges. Participants gain hands-on UX skills, mentorship from professionals, and portfolio-ready projects while collaborating in a community-focused environment.

Problem Statement

Farmers’ market vendors have little visibility outside of already established customers, and many customers are unaware of what vendors have to offer unless they specifically go up to the vendor to take a look at their products.

2023's Competition Prompt

Design a mobile application or web experience for a SLO local business or organization of your choice.

Our Organization

For our project, we chose SLO Farmers’ Market, a local community hub in San Luis Obispo that brings together local farmers, artisans, and food vendors. The market offers fresh, seasonal produce, handmade goods, and a space for the community to connect, making it an ideal organization to design for a user-centered website experience. It was a very popular spot for locals and college students to attend every Thursday from 6PM - 8:30PM.

Target Users

Farmer's Market Vendors

  • Visibility for vendors, who are mostly local small businesses in SLO county

  • Platform for vendors to market themselves to a wider audience

Farmer's Market Customers/
visitors

  • Simple navigation tool for customers to locate favorite vendors, products, and events

Research

To gather user insights, we created and distributed an online survey to market-goers and community members. The form asked participants about their visit habits, priorities when attending, and what features they would find most helpful on the website. The responses helped us identify key user needs and informed our design decisions.
